Ode to Nightjack

What dreadful news. How dare The Times. How dare the courts. I wish I had an address so that I could write to him...

What has happened to Nightjack is a lesson to us all, and a lesson in particular for me. I'm not sure I will return. How can I? How can any of us?

Dearest Nightjack, know that I am thinking of you, wherever you may be. Know that I admire your bravery and your determination. Know that I will never forget you, even though we have never met.

When the Nazis came for the communists,
I remained silent;
I was not a communist.

Then they locked up the social democrats,
I remained silent;
I was not a social democrat.

Then they came for the trade unionists,
I did not protest;
I was not a trade unionist.

Then they came for the Jews,
I did not speak out;
I was not a Jew.

When they came for me,
there was no one left to speak out for me.

Nightjack, you will be missed.

With love,
Snuffy x

Obviously The Times and other dead tree press journalists feel threatened by the likes of Nightjack and other bloggers.

What spiteful behaviour from The Times.

I'm as distressed as you are. A sad week for the Blogosphere.

Hope you're hanging in there at work. Here in Scotland end of term will soon be upon us but you'll have longer to wait.

I see you've taken down your archive. One thing is for sure, that any book deal, prize nomination or whatever for you, would mean The Times would name you and your school within probably 24 hours.

Welcome back Snuffy, if only on this dark occasion.

And the poem is appropriate in the sense that the feeling that our bosses and other fools we expose may well choose to threaten our careers and livelihoods.

It is a measure of the political corruption of the police and judiciary in this country that courts and constabulary came down on a poor, decent copper and blamed him for putting the police in bad light.

And as for the Times, I shall never buy it again.
"Thunderer my backside."

"The Informer"'s better, I think.

Wanted to tell you how much I've enjoyed your blog, just in case you end up closing up shop. Thanks Snuffy.

They couldn't silence the Chinese or the Iranians, they will never silence the rest of the bloggers.

There are a multitude of ways to hide the identity of your computer and what region you are posting from the rest is just very careful wording of each post not to give away any clues.

Come the General Election and Labour will be in the garbage bin where it belongs.

Well said Snuffy and it is good to hear from you again - it's been too long.

Both most of the dead tree press and the government hate bloggers, albeit for different reasons. The DTP hate the competition and the government hate the fact that they just cannot control the blogosphere... yet.

The show must go on - and that's for ALL of us! Remember - don't let the buggers get you down!!

Lovely to hear from you again.

I was begining to think you had forgotten us all.

Things are getting really nasty in this country.

The last vestiges of freedom of speech would seem to have gone. Nightjack forced to stop his blg.

People arrested for asking for policeman's number.

Demonstrators and elderly innocent bystander killed by police - and nothing happens.

I fear for the future my children have to look forward to in a country bankrupt financially, politically and morally and all the time descending into a corrupt police state.

Please keep blogging - I need a light at the end of the tunnel

Welcome back, and hope you enjoyed your break.

Terrible, Nightjack's experience, but look at it as the opening salvo in the culture wars - bloggers have numbers, persistence and skill on their side.

We will overcome!
